DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film

Directors Guild of America President Taylor Hackford announced the five nominees for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2009.

The nominees are (in alphabetical order):

Kathryn Bigelow The Hurt Locker (Summit Entertainment)

James Cameron Avatar (Twentieth Century Fox)

Lee Daniels Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire (Lionsgate)

Jason Reitman Up In The Air (Paramount Pictures)

Quentin Tarantino Inglourious Basterds (The Weinstein Company and Universal Pictures)

“The DGA Award is especially meaningful to directors because it is decided solely by their peers – the men and women who have been in the same trenches and know exactly what goes into the crafting of a unique motion picture,” said Hackford.  “The five nominees for this year have each expressed an indelible vision that transported audiences to vivid vistas of cinematic art.  My heartiest congratulations to all of the nominees”, said Taylor Hackford. Jason Reitman, Jeremy Renner, T Bone Burnett to be honored at 2010 Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala

Three more names have been added to honorees list at the 21st Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival.  Academy Award nominated director Jason Reitman will receive its Director of the Year Award for Up in the Air, Jeremy Renner will receive the Breakthrough Performance Award for The Hurt Locker and T Bone Burnett will receive the Frederick Loewe Award for Film Composing for Crazy Heart. The Awards Gala, presented by Cartier, will kick off the Festival on January 5 at the Palm Springs Convention Center and will be hosted by “Entertainment Tonight’s” Mary Hart. The Festival runs January 5-18, 2010.

Up in the Air stars Oscar-winner George Clooney and Anna Kendrick who is also being honored at the gala. The film also stars Vera Farmiga and Jason Bateman.

Reitman was honored by the Festival in 2008 with the Chairman’s Vanguard Award for Juno, which was also presented to the cast and writer Diablo Cody. Juno won three Independent Spirit awards and a Grammy Award. Reitman made his feature film directing debut with the 2006 hit, Thank You For Smoking. The film went on to earn a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture, an Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay, and a WGA nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. Reitman was also named Best Debut Director by the National Board of Review. (more…)

Festival Awards Gala to be Held Tuesday, January 5, 2010

Hosted by Entertainment Tonight’s Mary Hart

The 21st Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) will honor Anna Kendrick with the Rising Star Award for her performance in Up in the Air at the Festival’s annual Awards Gala.  Festival chairman Harold Matzner made the announcement at a private event at the historic Charlie Chaplin home of Patricia Barry in Beverly Hills,CA hosted by Festival board member Stephen Breimer. Darryl MacDonald and his programming staff greeted the assembled Los Angeles industry and media attended, many who have been involved with the festival since it’s inception. Industry executives both past and present along with producers, directors and media representatives including Variety’s Peter Bart, Indiewire’s Anne Thompson, Hollywood Reporters’ Editor, Elizabath Guider, critic Kirk Honeycutt, and Movieline’s Steven Farber sampled the featured and plentiful mexican appetizers and toasted the festival and its young star.  Marc Halperin, who brought Cinema Paradiso to the first festival, as the opening night film chatted with representatives from the Belgium and French consulates, as well as sponsor Regal Cinemas. The Awards Gala, presented by Cartier, will kick-off the 2010 Awards Season on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at the Palm Springs Convention Center, and will be hosted by Entertainment Tonight’s Mary Hart.  The Festival will be held January 5-18, 2010.
