Premiere of Drive at LA Film Festival

The most anticipated film at the Los Angeles Film Festival is Drive which is a metaphor for LA.  Fresh from its win at this year’s Cannes Film Festival where Nicholas Winding Refn won the Best director award. The director and stars were announced and then we are brought into the world of Echo Park, where neighbors share glances, and in the silence as Nic said, there is a greater sound.

Drive is set against the backdrop of East Los Angeles with broad shots of the city lights, including even the parking lot where the festival is held. It is filled with shots of the downtown, the highways and neighborhood streets and even parts of the Valley. Refn truly captured Los Angeles. Drive which he shot here last year was one of several films show at the festival that were shot and featured Los Angeles.  It was surreal to watch the film in this new state of the art Regal Premiere theatre where image and the sound system could magnificently recreate the rhythms of LA.   (more…)

OSCAR NOMINEES TO BE HONORED AT ACADEMY LUNCHEON

Monday is the the annual Academy Awards Luncheon and the Academy reports that nearly 3/4 of the actors nominated will attend along with all of the directors. From the Leading Actor and Actress categories, Jeff Bridges, George Clooney, Colin Firth, Morgan Freeman, Jeremy Renner, Sandra Bullock, Carey Mulligan, Gabourey Sidibe and Meryl Streep are expected to attend. Vera Farmiga, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Anna Kendrick, Woody Harrelson and Christoph Waltz will represent the Supporting Actress and Actor categories. Many of  those planning to attend have just been to the 25th Santa Barabara International Film Festival where they were honored.

Academy Awards® for outstanding film achievements of 2009 will be presented on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network beginning at 5 p.m. PT/ 8 p.m. ET. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

British Independent Film Awards nominations announced

THE RICHARD HARRIS AWARD (for outstanding contribution to British Film) is being awarded to Daniel Day Lewis

The  twelfth annual British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) were announced today, Monday 26 October, at Soho House in London. All of the films nominated for best picture and most of those in the other major categories have been or will be released in the United States. This is a major accomplishment in today’s independent market which is under major assault. (more…)
