The Los Angeles Theatre Center will be the host venue for a Los Angeles Wine Tasting Gourmet Rendezvous, on Friday, August 12. A vintage 60s fashion show produced by Dave Temple from Clever Vintage Clothing, providers for the Mad Men TV series will help set the mood. Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack provided a solid Hollywood feel to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Inaugural Gala, among the guests were Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Gene Kelly, Tony Curtis, Bette Davis, Peter Lawford, Jimmy Durante and more. Phil Stern captured the event with his iconic photographs which will be on display. A live jazz performance adds to the evening’s ambience.

With the summer in full swing come on down to Downtown meet some new friends or bring some vintage ones along to sample the food and wines, and help support LATC.  US wines are  handpicked from boutique wineries by Buzz Wine Beer Shop; Italian wines imported by D’Aquino; Light appetizers and artisan cheeses from Nicole’s Gourmet Food; and dessert includes Grand Cru chocolate truffles by Yvan Valentin.

60s attire is encouraged but not mandatory. Think early 60s elegance.

Friday, August 12, 2011, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admission: $64.

LATC: 514 S Spring St, Los Angeles, CA 90013

“Walk Like An Egyptian,” “Eternal Flame,” “Manic Monday,” “In Your Room,” all of these songs dominated the airwaves in the 1980′s and brought a smile to your face. If the iPod had existed a Special Edition would have been pink and this is what women would have been listening to as they went about their lives.

The Bangles, were rock superstars.  Susanna Hoffs (guitar/vocals), Vicki Peterson (guitar/vocals) and Debbi Peterson (drums/vocals) are one of the greatest all-female rock bands of all time. The original four bandmembers reunited and returned to the studio in 1999, to cut their newly written song “Get the Girl” for the soundtrack of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. In 2003, they released a  new album, titled Doll Revolution to positive reviews, and the Bangles spent much of the next year touring. After that the fourth member Michael Steele decided to retire from the band. The others have gone on to solo work since then, but they are now working together again. (more…)

Brett Perkins and Friends Concert Exceeds Expectations

Everything Divine poster circa 2000

The Valentine’s Day concert by Brett Perkins and Friends at the Sierra Madre Playhouse was a truly exceptional way to spend the holiday. What we were treated to was a series of snapshots of musicians lives and how they intersected. The night was led off by Brett Perkins, who played four songs and then introduced each of the other musicians with anecdotes about how they met or played together in other bands. We listened to three solo performances from each artist which gave us a sample of their style and artistry. The second half of the show was mostly group performances by the original members of The Edited Trio, and Everything Divine. The unifying factor was that Brett played in both bands. While each of the individual performers are highly talented in their own right the reuniting of Everything Divine was truly impressive. The melding of these individual talents was a perfect way to end the evening.

Brett told me they had only run through the songs once together before the show. It had been at least 7 years since they had all performed together. Everything Divine had never released an album of their songs and only 7 songs were ever recorded as a demos at the time. Those songs are available on the link above. Based on the packed theatre and the positive response from the audience they are hoping to do this again next year if everyone can be rounded up from all over the globe. (more…)
