Lenny Kravitz and Mariah Carey celebrate with Lee Daniels at Spirit Awards

Lee Daniels’ Precious swept the 25th anniversary of the Film Independent Spirit Awards taking home the Best Feature, Best Director, Best First Screenplay, Best Female Lead and Best Supporting Female awards. Precious won in every category for which it was nominated taking 5 awards. The other winners were lucky that Precious didn’t have any male actors nominated and Lee Daniels wasn’t a first time filmmaker.

Fox Searchlight was the other big winner with three awards, two for Crazy Heart,  Best First Feature, and Best Male Lead for Jeff Bridges; and one for (500) Days of Summer, for Best Screenplay. (more…)

Nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards Announced

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and 2008 Oscar® nominee Anne Hathaway took the stage at a 5:38 a.m. PT this morning, live news conference to announce the nominees in 10 of the 24 categories.

Mariah Carey on Oscar Trail

Today it was announced that Mariah Carey will be honored at the Capri, Hollywood Film Festival on Monday, December 28 with the “Capri Award for Supporting Actress of the Year 2009” for her outstanding performance in the critically acclaimed feature film Precious. The festival runs from December 28, 2009, through January 2, 2010. Capri is a stunning island off the coast of Naples, located only 20 miles from the mainland, it’s a popular destination for day trips. 25TH FILM INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARD NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED

25th Spirit awardsFilm Independent announced nominations this morning for the 25th Film Independent Spirit Awards.  A total of 35 films were nominated. Nominees for Best Feature include 500 Days Of Summer, Amreeka, Precious, Sin Nombre and The Last Station.  Taraji P. Henson and Matt Dillon also announced finalists for the Acura Someone to Watch Award, the Truer Than Fiction Award, and the Piaget Producers Award.

A Serious Man was selected for the Robert Altman Award, which is given to one film’s director, casting director and ensemble cast.

“It’s astonishing to look back upon the wealth of fresh and diverse filmmaking talent that has been nominated over the past 25 years,” said Film Independent’s Executive Director Dawn Hudson.  “This year’s nominees continue to uphold that independent spirit, and have created exceptional work that we are proud to spotlight and celebrate.”

The Spirit Awards Nominating Committee applies uniqueness of vision, original & provocative subject matter, economy of means (with particular attention paid to total production cost & individual compensation), and percentage of financing from independent sources as guidelines when making its selections. Hurt Locker was ineligible this year having already been nominated last year.

The 25th Film Independent Spirit Awards ceremony will air live and uncut on Friday, March 5, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. PST/11:00 p.m. EST on IFC (Independent Film Channel).
