Ray Bradbury at 40th San Diego Comic-Con by Marla Lewin

// July 27th, 2009 // Comments Off // Industry Event

Johnny Depp, Megan Fox, Tim Burton, Robert Downey Jr, Jeff Bridges, Tron, Superheros, and  Science Fiction are everywhere in downtown San Diego for 5 days. And then there is the man who epitomizes science fiction, Ray Bradbury. Ray wrote about Mars as well as The Illustrated Man little knowing that a future generation would become enamored with decorating themselves with tatoos to an unprecedented level. Ray attended the very first Comic-Con 40 years ago, and this year he wrote a forward to the program book, 40 years of Comic-Con.

Ray Bradbury at the Fremont theatre

Although in his 80′s Ray Bradbury  spoke again this year, as he has each year at the Santa Barbara Writers Conference, and at libraries and other venues where he can persuade young people to embrace reading.  He has spoken to the Palm Springs Womens Press, were he spoke to young students who were studing his book Farenheit 451. Ray’s message is always the same we should  treasure books. Ray once told us how he loved dinosaurs and exploration but didn’t fly until the age of 62 but then began to fly regularly. John Huston had hired him to write the script for his movie Moby Dick in 1953, after reading one of his short stories. Ray has published more than 600 short stories in 60 years. Ray will be 89 on August 22 of this year. I was fortunate to have attended his 80th birthday celebration which included performances of some of his plays and tributes from friends and performers he has known over the years.

Ray Bradbury really is a renassiance man, a forward thinker.  He writes short stories, and poetry; as well as  books and plays that get made in to movies.  He has planned shopping centers for cities including the Glendale Galleria.  He wrote The Martian Chronicles, and we all expected to have a man there by now.  He has writen about book burnings,(Farenheit 451) as we move into an internet age, he continues to write and speak and inspire us all. His latest book is, We’ll Always Have Paris.  In 2001 he received  the National Book Award for his contribution to American literature, and in 2004, he was awarded the National Medal for the Arts.  In 2007, he was made a COMMANDER OF THE ORDER OF ARTS AND LETTERS (Frances highest literary honor) and was was awarded a Pulitzer Prize Citation for his carreer.

Ray still makes his home here in Los Angeles. In recent years, Ray has been attending  performances of his plays, lately at the Frement theatre in Pasadena. His plays really should be staged around the world. There are three one acts, entitled RAY BRADBURY’S YESTERMORROWS,  playing at this time through September 5th, directed by Alan Neal Hubbs.

A Device Out of Time features David Fox-Brenton and brothers Seth and Daniel Casanova. This story is about how each of us is a time machine that allows others to glimpse the past through our experiences however fleeting.  The Cistern features  Georgan George, and Rose Prichard.  It is a story of love lost and rediscovered through reflection on a quiet afternoon. The Meadow is set in a decaying movie studio, which is haunted by old props and characters, sets of grand cities, and a caretaker not wanting to see the land sold for a real estate development.  Michael Prichard plays the caretaker and old friend to the studio mogul played by Steven Robert Wollenberg, it also features Andy Sell, and Robert Kerr. This was probably based on Ray’s own experiences as he watched movie studios close to his home converted into Century City and housing tracks from the imagination factories that he often worked at or passed on his daily activities.

Ray is a national treasure and we will be eternally grateful to his gift of imagination. So if you have a desire to walk among the stars on Mars or wander the African Veldt or visit the 600 other locations that Ray has chronicled pick up one of his books, watch one of his movies or television shows or attend a live performance and you might be fortunate enough to meet the master himself.

// June 24th, 2009 // Comments Off // Movie Premiere

Transformers thrills audience with Airplanes, Cars, and Giant Battling Robots.
Tonight was the U.S. Premiere of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as part of the Los Angeles Film Festival. Shia La Beouf attended the premiere in Westwood, with his mother, Shayna.  It was a star studded event with the entire cast in attendance including Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson and John Turturro. Some celebrities with films in the festival who didn’t attend their own premieres showed up for this major event, including one of Shia’s mentors Jon Voight.
Sam Witwicky’s (Shia LaBeouf) parents in the film provide the humor as well as the pathos.  His character Sam, is headed to college, and his girlfriend played by Megan Fox is considering breaking up with him since he is leaving town.  He asks her to join him, and she realizes they have been through a lot in their past, and she cannot give him up.
They are once again off on  a journey to assist the good robots, discover ancient symbols, and save the world. Michael Bay uses an enormous palette to tell his story. Action is set against large cities and even the pyramids. The cast and crew shot in Egypt, Jordan, New Mexico, San Diego, Paris and on the Playa Vista set.
Children of all ages will want to see the film at least twice to absorb all the special effects and transforming trucks, cars, planes, and other eye candy.
The film is already number one internationally and looks to be the film of the summer.

Locations, Parties and Productions by Marla Lewin

// April 19th, 2009 // Comments Off // Industry Event

The world’s film commissioners have descended on Hollywood this week, promoting their  locations around the world especially within the United States, Canada, and England to shoot your next feature.  If you have the money, there are tax rebates available to entice filmmakers to work beyond Hollywood.  If one looks to Variety’s production charts, it is obvious, that until California also has incentives and rebates to offer,along with the great sunshine, talent is being lured away to other locales.

We started our day at a breakfast at the Viceroy Hotel in Santa Monica hosted by the Atlantic FIlm Group of Canada.   This association of the three provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland are keen to bring film and television crews to their locale.  They showed slides and we all agreed that there are wonderful locations available in their country and the combination of urban and rural filming opportunities was impressive. Representatives from several U.S. productions companies were present  including HBO.

Those that had filmed recently in these provinces vouched for the local cooperation and ease of working there plus there are hefty incentives being offered.

The HBO representative was excited about the premiere of  GREY GARDENS starring Drew Barrymore at the Mann Chinese theatre Thursday night.

Mandate Pictures which had shot JUNO in Toronto also discussed a film which is shooting in New York THE BASTER a romantic comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman which also stars Patrick Wilson and Jeff Goldblum  for Miramax Films.

On to the Canadian Film Center party celebrating their twenty years of training Canadian talent, this was held at “The London” Hotel off Sunset. This program was started by Norman Jewison, who is being honored with a tribute at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on Friday evening.

The big announcement of the evening was a new partnership with NBC-Universal to provide training and opportunities for Canadians in the film industry.

We finished the evening at the Roosevelt Hotel in the heart of Hollywood with the Missouri Film Commission.  We spoke with Connie Stevens, and who just finished wrapping a picture she directed in Kansas City.

James Brolin had also finished shooting a film there and was very impressed with the city for both its architecture and its cultural offerings.

Mr. Brolin  also spoke about his excitement for  his son Josh Brolin who is starting to shoot JONAH HEX, for Warner Bros. on Monday. Jimmy Hayward is directing the film in which Megan Fox stars along with John Malkovich.

Jonah Hex (Brolin) is a Confederate civil war veteran now working as a bounty hunter and gunslinger with a terribly scarred face. We were told the face make-up will take 2 and 1/2 hours to apply each day. Hex was first created in 1972 by created by writer John Albano and artist Tony DeZuniga and appeared first in DC Comics All-Star Western #10, which was renamed Weird Western Tales 2 issues later. Jonah Hex got its own book  in 1977 after 28 issues. The new series lasted for 92 more issues with Michael Fleisher as the main writer. The character has been revived several times since.

After that Josh is also scheduled to shoot the new Woody Allen film in NY.  Woody’s latest, which we saw in Vegas at Showest recently, will open the Tribeca Film Festival with Larry David, playing Woody, and breaking the fourth wall, it is sure to bring down the house.

James also said a large shoot is going on in Malibu.  Could this be IRON-MAN 2?

So Hollywood is buzzing with production again.

Tonight Norman Jewison will be honored at the LA County Museum, where they will be showing MOONSTRUCK with an appearance by Cher, Fay Dunaway, and famed cinematographer, Haskell Wexler.  I spoke with Haskell earlier this week, and he was disappointed that the showing of IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT had been cancelled.  He plans to join Norman to celebrate, the screening of MOONSTRUCK.  Haskell also shot Norman’s “THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR, which Fay Dunaway starred in with Steve McQueen.

I contacted John Patrick Shanley, to see if he could make the screening earlier this week, and he said he had already made a prior commitment in New York.  He did say that he loved Norman, and that he would “think” of him tonight.  When I asked for a quote, he said, “I had at one time in my life a cast iron bulldog who’s sole purpose was to hold open the door. To me, Norman Jewison is a cast iron bulldog holding open a door to the human experience.”
